"This Week in Alexander" is a new weekly column by Teija Hokenson, an 11th grader. The column aims to spread the word about everything happening in Alexander. Teija will be gathering info and chatting with students and staff weekly. Do you have questions or a story to share? Feel free to email her at teija.hokenson@alexandercomets.org.
As the third week of the school year begins, everyone’s still getting into the groove of things- but it’s off to a good start here in Alexander! With new teachers, new students, and new experiences all around, this year already promises to be a good one.
Down in Pre-K, the kids are all making new friends and preparing for a year filled with learning and fun, while the Kindergarteners are learning all about The Leader In Me program and the seven habits. The Leader In Me program teaches kids how to lead effectively and fairly, and the kindergarteners are enjoying it- although it sounds as if they are having fun learning how to count, as well. Our first graders are looking forward to Hydro planting next week, and we’re looking forward to seeing what grows!
Second graders Mavverick and Katherine are feeling pretty good about the new school year, so it’s safe to say that, bee stings aside, our Second Grade is ready to go!
Grades 5-8 all went on a field trip last week to see monster trucks in Watford City, and they’re still fired up from that. Letti and Greyson, both Fifth Graders, would like to remind the school to be confident, kind, and “don’t say you like toes, because that’s weird.”
For sixth grade, learning how to switch classes each period is new, but it seems they’re not having much trouble. When asked what they’d like to tell younger classes, the unanimous decision appeared to be “Don’t be scared about switching classes. It’s easy once you get the hang of it.” (Harper, 6th Grade). “Be yourself, and you’ll make friends.” (MaKenna, 6th Grade).
Our new freshmen are finally entering the last stage of their educational journey- High School. Luckily for them, this year’s sophomores have some advice! “Don’t make the teachers mad,” Collin says. “And don’t mess around until your work is done.” “Get stuff done,” Chantal agrees.
For seniors, this is the beginning of the last year they’ll be students at Alexander. “It’s been pretty calm,” Paiten says on her way to the office during lunch, but adds that she knows it will get hectic. “Have fun,” Will says when asked what he’d like to tell this year’s juniors. “Time flies.”
Our new High School teachers are making a splash! Mrs. Hernandez has a reputation as very nice and approachable. Math this year is definitely going to be challenging with new curriculums, but we have faith in our students and their teacher. Mr. Sagert’s class is known as super fun and engaging, and we’re already anticipating some labs next week! Music is off to a great start as well. Mrs. Belden is very patient and kind. Stay tuned for next week's issue to learn more about our new Elementary teachers.
The 68th Annual Old Settlers is coming up this weekend, and it promises to be one of the best yet. Come join us for a weekend of fun, games, and food at the park in Alexander!
The renovations and construction of the new wing of the school are underway, which means the playground is currently in storage. Soon it will be relocated to the hill, although it was sad to see our trees go! We’re looking forward to seeing our new school in the fall of 2025.
Sports are in full swing here in Alex. Volleyball has its first game on the third, while Football started the year off strong with a win against Mohall last weekend. There is another football game on the 30th at Old Settlers and we hope to see you there! Go Comets!
